Swami Harshanandaji is a senior monk of the well-known Ramakrishna Monastic Order, which was started by Swami Vivekananda. He was posted as the President of the Bangalore Ashrama in May 1989 and is continuing as such.
The Swami is an initiated disciple of Swami Virajananda, the sixth President of the Order. He joined the Bangalore Ahrama in early 1954. He was ordained sannyasa in 1962 by Swami Vishuddhananda, the eighth President of the Order. He has worked in several centres of the Ramakrishna Math such as those in Mangalore, Mysore, Belur Math and Allahabad. He worked in the Andhra relief centre also for a short period.
The Swami has a scholarly bent of mind and has authored several books on Hindu religion and philosophy in Kannada, English and Sanskrit. Some of his books have been published from the University of Mysore. Many of his books have been translated into foreign languages. His other interest is on subjects pertaining to students, Hindu religion and culture. In May, 2008 a three volume Encyclopedia of Hinduism was released - which will be a major contribution to the already existing literature on that subject. He worked on this assignment for nearly thirty years.
He is a good speaker both in Kannada and in English. He regularly delivers discourses in the Ashrama on Saturdays (in Kannada) and Sundays (in English). He is good at singing bhajans also.
